MARSHFIELD – For years, Maureen and Tom Coleman dreamed of opening their own restaurant. A long-time chef who has worked up and down the East Coast, Tom Coleman said they were just waiting for the right opportunity.

So when the owners of Hola in Marshfield Center were looking to sell, they called the Colemans. Maureen Coleman had worked at the restaurant and was good friends with the owners, so it made perfect sense.

In 2019, the Colemans reopened the restaurant as Liv Creative Cuisine, named for their now 10-year-old daughter, Olivia.

Tom Coleman describes the cuisine at Liv as “New American” and said the menu runs the gamut from different ethnicities and how the food is prepared.

“Really, our core ideals are farm-to-table, organics and all-natural to put out a better plate of food,” he said. “We try to harness the local farms and local fishermen.”

For example, nearly all of the eggs the restaurant uses come from Little’s Creek Farm in Marshfield and mushrooms come from McGuire's Mushrooms in Hingham.

“Value is important to us for our clientele,” Tom Coleman said. “It’s expensive to go out to eat, so our goal is to make people realize we’re a great option. Our menu is all-natural, organic and local, so it’s a great value.”

Coleman said some one of customers’ favorite menu items is cod in chowder – a recipe of his that he said has been on the menu since the beginning and one that remains on the menu at four other restaurants where he’s worked.

“It’s so good they kept it on there,” Maureen Coleman said.

Customers also love the flatbread pizza and the entrée salads – including a wedge salad with buffalo shrimp – made with local seafood and blue cheese from Great Hill Dairy in Marion.

Maureen Coleman wrote the cocktail menu, which includes drinks made with syrups made in-house and "very selective" spirits that are often organic and sustainably made.

"We try to focus on a better, cleaner product, and people have responded well to it," she said.

The beer menu also features local and New England brewers, such as Allagash Brewing Co. and Fiddlehead Brewing.

Maureen Coleman describes the inside of the restaurant as "contemporary," and said "it's not super fancy, but it's also not a pub." There are pops of color, including orange cushions, big globe lights and a large communal table in the front. Coleman said the back room is quiet and cozy.

The restaurant also has an enclosed 35-seat patio with a large wood fireplace and heaters.

The Colemans also purchased a food trailer last year, called Liv on the Road, that the couple uses for catering. Tom Coleman said they can cater events from 30 to 250 people.
